I was never political and, voting for Prokhorov (we did 8% that year!) and Titov (0.76%) during the 2012 and 2018 elections, did not get upset with the results. I am considering Russia being really close to an autocratic state, yet I was never sure whether the current system or the opposition are more repulsive.

Navalny is controversial. There are aspects of his political career and political statements that are never brought up in independent (or Western) media. However, the recent events and his arrest are clearly a political repression and an attack on Russian civil society.
